A fine example of a Set of 4 antique Indian teak wood plantation chairs, dating from c1910. In great original condition, with lovely patination and restored using traditional techniques and the finest natural wicker weave materials. The design was created to optimise the comfort of the occupier during the Raj, by allowing air to circulate around them whilst they relaxed during the very hot and humid weather. Some come with extendable arms so that the legs could also be raised. These chairs could be found at one time on every tea plantation verandah in India – hence the name. Today they look wonderful in conservatories and summer rooms, as well as in lounges, hotel lobbys and are often used for TV and Film purposes. It is extremely unusual to find FOUR matching plantation chairs, making these very rare. As old pieces there are some historic repairs and age related marks and wear and tear as you would expect.
