This rustic Surti Chest was made to last in the 19th century from thick teak wood and then iron and brass bound to give it extra strength. This one is in its beautiful original teak wood natural condition. Chests like this were “custom made” by the head of the family, who commissioned a carpenter to make one to store valuables such as textiles, jewellery, dowry and cash. They we’re locked with strong padlocks for maximum security. Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India. This chest is the perfect height and depth for a coffee table, and doubles up as a storage box for magazines, newspapers and books. It also comes with wheels to make it even more unique and easy to move. This wonderful Surti Coffee Table Chest was made in Gujarat State during the Victorian era. It is a good sized utility piece that can be usefully placed anywhere in the home. This is also a unique one of piece which was made by hand many years ago and has a lovely patina which really shows its age and history.
